Overview

Buckinghamshire Council logo

We are seeking your views on the proposed installation of CCTV cameras in 12 locations in Buckinghamshire.

We are proposing to install up to 32 cameras in town centres and other central areas.

We have engaged with key stakeholders including Thames Valley Police and reviewed crime and disorder data to identify the proposed locations.

We are proposing the cameras cover the town and other central areas of eight locations which do not currently have cameras and four locations where we propose additional cameras.

The eight locations which do not currently have cameras are:

  • Amersham Old Town
  • Chalfont St Giles
  • Farnham Common
  • Great Missenden
  • Holmer Green
  • Iver
  • Wendover
  • Winslow

The four locations where we propose additional cameras are:

  • Amersham
  • Buckingham
  • Castlefield, High Wycombe
  • Gerrards Cross

We would like to hear from residents and businesses in these locations and welcome suggestions for the town centre and central areas where CCTV could improve community safety.

CCTV digitalisation programme

We have recently completed  a county wide digitalisation programme converting old analogue cameras to state-of-the-art digital units.

Phase 1 of this programme replaced older cameras to newer digital cameras in locations that already had CCTV.

This consultation forms part of Phase 2, where we are proposing to install CCTV cameras in previously unmonitored areas and new locations.

We have a statutory duty to consult on installation and monitoring of public space CCTV surveillance systems under the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012  and the Biometrics and Surveillance Camera Commissioner's guidance.

CCTV and community safety

Buckinghamshire Council is committed to helping the Police in their work to prevent and detect crime and disorder in Buckinghamshire. We recognise that CCTV can be a useful tool in this work and can help to reduce crime and contribute to a greater feeling of safety among residents.

We know that cameras on their own do not stop crime and are not effective for all types of crime. We also understand that not all residents are supportive of the use of CCTV. For these reasons, our approach is evidence led, with a limited and considered expansion of the public space camera system. This means we will only use CCTV cameras in the areas of highest need and we will aim to do so with Police and public support. We will also adhere to the legislation which governs this area and work within the Biometrics and Surveillance Camera Commissioner’s guidance.

To deliver our commitments, we will work closely with the Police and other organisations who form the Safer Buckinghamshire Partnership Board.
