Chesham Conservation Area appraisal consultation
2. Proposed addition to the conservation area: Thomas Harding School and Housing in Wey Lane
The Thomas Harding School is a multi-gabled Edwardian school, of brick and tile construction with roughcast gables and large timber windows to the frontage. The building is asymmetrical and an example of the freestyle architecture of the time.
The nearby housing in Wey Lane is of red brick and plain clay tile construction, with stone dressings, decorative ridge tiles and brick chimneys. Some properties have dormers and front bays. There are shallow front gardens and low brick walls to the front of properties.
Edwardian architecture has been undervalued in the past. Both the school and housing represent the development of Chesham in the Edwardian period, contributing to the special architectural or historic interest and character of the Conservation Area.
