We want to hear your views on the draft Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (PNA) for Buckinghamshire.

All Health and Wellbeing Boards (HWB) have a responsibility to publish a Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (PNA).

The purpose of the PNA is to:

  • support local commissioners in decisions about services delivered by community pharmacies
  • support NHS England in their decision-making process. This is related to applications for new pharmacies or changes at existing pharmacies

There are 83 community pharmacies, 10 dispensing GPs, 1 dispensing appliance contractor and 2 distance selling pharmacies located within Buckinghamshire.

Health and Wellbeing Board statements on service provision

The PNA Task and Finish group, on behalf of the HWB, has assessed whether the current and future pharmacy provision meets the health and wellbeing needs of the Buckinghamshire population. It has also determined whether there are any gaps in the provision of pharmaceutical service either now or within the lifetime of this document, from the date of its publication to the 30 September 2028.

It has concluded that:

  • Buckinghamshire is well served in relation to the number and location of pharmacies.
  • there is good access to necessary and other relevant services
  • there are no gaps in the current and future provision of these services identified.

Buckinghamshire Health and Wellbeing Board

The Health and Wellbeing Board partnership helps councillors, GPs and other partners to work together to improve health and wellbeing in Buckinghamshire.

The aim of the Board is to find ways of improving the health of the local population and reduce inequalities in health.

How the draft PNA has been developed

The Board commissioned Healthy Dialogues to conduct their PNA for October 2025.

In January 2025, a steering group was formed to oversee the process and to ensure that it meets statutory regulations.

The draft report has been produced by looking at:

  • the demographics and health needs of the population
  • the current pharmacy network and its services
  • a survey to Buckinghamshire patients and the public on their use and expectations of pharmacy services
  • an assessment of NHS Pharmacy services commissioned in Buckinghamshire

We want to hear from you

We are required to consult with specific organisations as part of this process of producing the PNA. We also welcome views from residents in Buckinghamshire.

We want to hear your views on the draft Buckinghamshire PNA to:

  • make sure the draft assessment reflects the current pharmaceutical services and needs in your area, and
  • help identify any gaps or improvements that need to be made to the final PNA.
