Bedgrove Park Cycleway Improvements
Overview
Buckinghamshire Highways are proposing upgrades for walking, cycling and wheeling within the Bedgrove Park area of Aylesbury. These improvements include a new shared use parallel crossing and raised table crossing on Turnfurlong Lane, upgrade of the existing puffin crossing to a toucan crossing, and conversion several existing permissive footways to shared use paths.
We would like to hear your thoughts on this.
Background
We're proposing new and improved paths for walking, cycling and wheeling between the Hampden Fields development and Camborne Avenue, which will form part of the Buckinghamshire Greenway.
This would create new local links and improve walking, cycling and wheeling access to:
- Bedgrove Park open space
- sports facilities including the new BMX pump track
- local schools and businesses
- the Hampden Fields development and onwards connectivity to Weston Turville
- Amber Way Gemstone route towards the town centre, via Turnfurlong
The new and improved paths will be up to 3 metres wide with a smooth surface and supported by features such as wayfinding signs, wider footbridges and resting points.
The project will also utilise and upgrade an existing crossing point recently installed on Camborne Avenue, and deliver a new parallel (zebra style) raised table crossing on Turnfurlong Lane connecting to the Amber Way Gemstone route.
This project is funded by:
- A grant from the UK Government (Homes England)
A future phase of the project will consider improvements to the Amber Way route along Turnfurlong once this stage is completed.
Further to this, the Department for Transport recently released guidance to Local Authorities to help them design Cycle Infrastructure - Department of Transport - Cycle Infrastructure Design - Local Transport Note 1/20 (July 2020).
Our Aims
The Bedgrove Park Cycleway Improvement project is designed to benefit the local community by creating safer, more accessible cycling routes through Bedgrove. It will connect residents to key destinations such as Hampden Fields, local amenities, and existing paths along Turnfurlong—encouraging healthier lifestyles, reducing traffic, and fostering a stronger sense of local connectivity.
We aim to undertake the following improvements as part of the project:
- Installation of a new raised table parallel crossing on Turnfurlong Lane next to the junction with Camborne Avenue.
- Upgrade of the existing Puffin to a Toucan (shared use) crossing on Camborne Avenue
- Conversion of existing footways on either side of the new crossings to shared use pedestrian and cycle paths connecting the Amber Way Gemstone Route on Turnfurlong Lane to Bedgrove Park
- Alterations to the existing Turnfurlong Lane/Camborne Avenue junction kerb line to help slow traffic on approach to the new raised table
- Installation of new pathway along the east and west side of Bedgrove Park
- Conversion of several permissive paths within the Bedgrove Park area to shared use and widening up to 3 metres width
- Installation of wider footbridges over the Bedgrove brook through the Spinney
- Connection into to Hampden Fields West development and onward connectivity to Weston Turville
Whilst we aim to minimise our impacts on the environment when we come to build the scheme, there will be localised removal of vegetation and small trees to facilitate construction works of the improved path.
Additionally, where identified by our Arboricultural (Tree) Officers, we will also remove damaged and/or diseased trees immediately adjacent to the path to improve the local environment and accessibility.
